May 26 July 9, 2009 Culture is a choice. On a problem of the choice between bad and good, beautiful and ugly is influence by time. What was progressive in Greek Spartan society in 20th century Germany was fascism. In order to facilitate our understanding humanity created a collective memory: the museum. For art museums became temples. Specially after 20th century when museum became a separate empire with its own galleries, customs, action houses and biennales. When you open an art magazine it is surprising how many museums of contemporary art was build in such a brief period of time. There is a whole category of architects who are exclusively occupied in planing museums. All of this speaks of a rising role of museums in society. Museum is archive and a collective memory. The best art objects and the newest achievements are displayed in museums. A dream of every artist to have their works exhibit in a famous museum to be recognized, understood and highly priced by society. For a living artist having his work in a museum involve a dualism: yes, on one hand it is a grace, recognition of the achievements, but on another hand for a living art work being in a museum - an archive - a tomb is a kind of death. Through museums and galleries an artist exchanges his achievements in art for a social and a material goods. Leonid Sokov |
